Glory of Jesus

Read: Mark 9:1-13

“Then he drove it home by saying, “This isn’t pie in the sky by and by. Some of you who are standing here are going to see it happen, see the kingdom of God arrive in full force.” Six days later, three of them did see it. Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. His clothes shimmered, glistening white, whiter than any bleach could make them. Elijah, along with Moses, came into view, in deep conversation with Jesus. Peter interrupted, “Rabbi, this is a great moment! Let’s build three memorials—one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah.” He blurted this out without thinking, stunned as they all were by what they were seeing. Just then a light-radiant cloud enveloped them, and from deep in the cloud, a voice: “This is my Son, marked by my love. Listen to him.” The next minute the disciples were looking around, rubbing their eyes, seeing nothing but Jesus, only Jesus. Coming down the mountain, Jesus swore them to secrecy. “Don’t tell a soul what you saw. After the Son of Man rises from the dead, you’re free to talk.” They puzzled over that, wondering what on earth “rising from the dead” meant. Meanwhile they were asking, “Why do the religion scholars say that Elijah has to come first?” Jesus replied, “Elijah does come first and get everything ready for the coming of the Son of Man. They treated this Elijah like dirt, much like they will treat the Son of Man, who will, according to Scripture, suffer terribly and be kicked around contemptibly.”” (‭‭Mark‬ ‭9:1-13‬ ‭MSG‬‬)

This instance is the first time that the disciples saw Jesus as not just a man, but as the Son of God. Peter, James, and John were hand picked by Jesus, maybe because of their maturity to be able to understand what had happened on that mountain.

In verse 10 it states, “They kept it to themselves, but they often asked each other what he meant by rising from the dead.” It was natural for the disciples to be confused about Jesus' death and resurrection because they could not see into the future. We, on the other hand, have God’s revealed Word (Bible) to give us the full meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection. We have no excuse for our unbelief.

Now keep in mind that Jesus had just upped the ante with His disciples. He was no longer just a mere man, but was the Christ. He deserves total allegiance and obedience and they would need to sacrifice everything to walk alongside Him.

As you continue your walk with Jesus, just as the disciples did, you will see His glory revealed time and time again. Whether it is dealing with the general struggles of life, comfort in the time of mourning, or sometimes it is an outpouring of wisdom over a situation that we have never had before. His glory will continue to be present daily as we progress through our journey of faith.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for who You are. I pray that You continue to show me the depth and riches of Your glory as I continue to follow and place my faith in You. Thank You for Your death and resurrection and I pray that You help me overcome my unbelief. I continue to yield myself to You daily Jesus, have Your way in me and through me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
