Acting In Goodness

Read: Galatians 5:22 and Titus 2:14

What is “goodness”? We will often see it described as being morally good or virtuous. As a fruit of the spirit, it is much more than simply doing something to be considered virtuous. Goodness is a selfless action.

When we were young and growing up, we were told over and over to “be good”. This may have looked like doing our chores, our homework and listening to our parents. However, when we only strive to be “good” for our personal benefit, it is not truly goodness that we possess.

We need to act out of the true goodness of our hearts. This will help us to remain obedient to God’s will for our lives and to seek the benefit of others. Goodness will not allow us to remain selfish and self centered, but it will force us to place the needs of others before our own. Our actions will come from a place of selflessness.

We have come to know God’s goodness toward His people through the life and death of our savior Jesus Christ. He is the perfect example of goodness, for He died on the cross for the sins of humanity.

We can show goodness daily. It is through simple acts such as an encouraging word or a prayer for someone in need. It is the small acts daily that no one notices that will allow goodness to flow from your heart. Even if no one else notices, God does, bringing glory to His name.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for teaching us about goodness. Thank you for your goodness, for waking me up this morning and for blessing me with all that I have. Thank you for your Son and His perfect example of goodness by giving His life for all of us who fall short. I pray that you continue to soften my heart and allow your goodness to flow from me, so that I can help those around me and bring glory to your name. Amen.
