Day Two: Prayer & Fasting

Day Two.
Read Genesis 3.

Every year I try to re-read the Bible and I'm always fascinated by new revelations and insights.

The first humans lost paradise over food!

The enemy used a fruit to deceive them. We don't know what kind of fruit. Most scholars agree that the garden of Eden would’ve been around the area of Iran or Iraq. In that region many fruits are prominent, like dates, melon, pomegranate, apples, raisins…

But the point was not necessary the fruit, but what it promised to deliver.

”“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”“
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

They wanted to be like God, or better yet, to be their own god.

We are still falling for the same deception today.
We buy into physical temptations that promises spiritual satisfaction, and we are left empty and in rebellion against God.

These temptations comes in many ways, like a relationship, a job, a promotion, a trip… all GOOD things that promises to deliver what only God can give us.

That is another main reason why we need to fast.

We fast to crave the right things in life.
We fast to replace ourselves with God and repent from the temptation of being our own god.

Imagine if Adam & Eve fasted on that day?

Esau is another one who sold his God-given birthrights for food, a bowl of stew:

”See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.“
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭16‬ ‭NIV‬‬

We fast to align our cravings with God.

”My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.“
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭73‬:‭26‬ ‭NIV‬‬

See you at 7pm.
